Polyester vs Cotton: Which Fabric is Best for Your Jersey or Corporate Shirt?

Fabric choice affects everything from comfort to durability to how your design is printed. Before deciding on your custom jersey or corporate shirt, here's what you actually need to know about polyester, cotton — and where "dri-fit" fits into the picture.

Quick Answer

Polyester is the better choice for sports jerseys and active wear — it wicks sweat, dries quickly, and holds up well to sublimation printing. Cotton is the better choice for everyday comfort and sensitive skin, especially for corporate wear worn in air-conditioned settings. Neither is "better" overall — it depends on how and where the shirt will be worn.

Is Polyester Dri-Fit?

This is one of the most common questions we get, and the short answer is: not exactly.

"Dri-FIT" is actually a trademarked technology name owned by Nike — it isn't a generic fabric type. Nike's Dri-FIT is a specific microfiber polyester construction engineered for moisture management. Over time, "dri-fit" has become a casual, generic term many people use to describe any moisture-wicking polyester fabric — but technically, true Dri-FIT only refers to Nike's branded version.

What actually determines whether a fabric keeps you dry isn't the name on the label — it's its sweat-wicking (moisture-wicking) properties. A fabric wicks sweat by drawing moisture away from your skin to the outer surface of the shirt, where it can evaporate quickly. Polyester is naturally well-suited to this because of its fibre structure, which is why most "dri-fit-style" sportswear — including ours — is made from polyester, even when it isn't the Nike-branded product.

So when you're choosing a jersey, the more useful question isn't "is this dri-fit?" — it's "does this fabric wick moisture well?"

Polyester: Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Wicks sweat and dries quickly, keeping you cooler during activity
  • Naturally offers some UV protection, and some technical polyester fabrics are specially engineered for enhanced UV protection
  • Holds up well to sublimation printing, keeping full-colour designs vibrant and long-lasting
  • Lightweight and durable, holding its shape over repeated wear and washing

Cons:

  • Less naturally breathable than cotton in humid conditions, though technical weaves help offset this
  • Can feel less soft against the skin compared to natural fibres, which matters for sensitive skin

Cotton: Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • An organic, natural material, which makes it generally gentler and less irritating on sensitive skin
  • Soft, breathable feel that many people find more comfortable for everyday, non-active wear
  • Works well with silkscreen printing for logos and simpler designs

Cons:

  • Not moisture-wicking — cotton absorbs sweat and moisture rather than drawing it away from the skin, which can leave it feeling damp during activity
  • Takes longer to dry than polyester
  • Can lose shape slightly over time with repeated washing, compared to polyester's durability

What About Anti-Bacterial Fabric?

Beyond the standard polyester vs cotton choice, there are also technical fabrics manufactured with anti-bacterial properties — these are treated or woven to help resist bacteria growth, which is especially useful for active wear worn for extended periods or in humid climates. If hygiene and odour control are a priority for your team, this is worth asking about when choosing your fabric.

Microfiber: An Alternative Worth Considering

Microfiber is another fabric option worth knowing about, often used as an alternative to standard polyester. It's made from extremely fine synthetic fibres, giving it a noticeably soft touch while still offering good moisture-wicking performance — making it a comfortable middle-ground option.

The trade-off: microfiber tends to have lower breathability compared to standard polyester weaves, so it may not be the best fit for high-intensity activity in Singapore's heat, but works well for corporate wear or lighter use where softness matters more than maximum airflow.

Which Should You Choose?

  • Sports jerseys, active use: Polyester — built for moisture-wicking performance and sublimation printing
  • Corporate shirts, office wear, sensitive skin: Cotton, or a cotton blend — more comfortable for all-day, lower-activity wear
  • Want softness with some moisture-wicking: Microfiber — a comfortable alternative to standard polyester, best suited to lighter activity
